See below for an excerpt of the article: PROGRAMS FEED DEMAND FOR SKILLED TECHNICIANS BUMPER TO BUMPER At Ventura College in Ventura, California, the two-year diesel mechanics program has 44 students. Faculty lead Blane Schloo says the catalyst was a local Navistar dealer needing technicians and approaching the college. “We’ve been around since August 2016 and our primary focus currently is trucks and buses,” Schloo says, describing classroom and workshop-based instruction that covers everything from basic tools and safety, to electrical and hydraulics, to brakes and drivetrain, to engines and fuel systems. “Bumper-to-bumper,” Schloo says. “We have nine courses currently and I’m working on five more to encompass some agricultural classes, so we’ll hopefully be branching out in the next couple years.” With the first few cohorts already through the program, graduates have found work in truck-related circles such as fleets run by municipalities, fire departments and construction service providers. It’s early days for Ventura’s program, and while none of its grads has yet landed full-time in a service truck, several have expressed interest and a few even want to run their own repair businesses. “I’ve had a few students who were definitely capable of working out of a truck on their own, but I would say it’s basically lack of experience,” Schloo says, recommending patience and persistence in pursuing career goals. “We do our best to get students ready for the work environment, and they come to me with various degrees of experience.
